In parts of Europe,the Green Woodpecker is called the “rain bird” because its call (which sounds kind of like a laugh) is often heard during rainy periods. The reason why these birds call during precipitation is quite simple:ants are one of the green woodpecker’s favorite foods,and rain moistens the soil,making it easier to catch (and eat) these delicious treats. You’d be excited too,were you a green woodpecker.
